Today is Right Whale Day!

Critically endangered North Atlantic right whales rely on MA waters for food and passage on their seasonal migrations. But here, as in most of their habitat, they are threatened by boat strikes & fishing gear entanglements.

A fractured vertebra from N. Atlantic right whale #1950.

'Preliminary findings included catastrophic injuries with a dislocation of the whale’s spine and fractures to all vertebrae in the lower back.'

This is the kind of force that boats create when they hit a whale.

More awful news for a species on the brink: Yet another endangered right whale has been found dead — this one an adult female that recently gave birth to a calf. It's unlikely the calf will survive either. The whale was found off Va.

I'm no economist but I remember something about supply, demand, etc. being pretty important.
