Wow! Epiphany 🤯 — What if, instead of us focusing on #learningloss. What if we focused on learning gains—what new knowledge, skills, and experiences have our students picked up during the pandemic? Hmm—🤔.

This #NationalReadingMonth, consider the role texts can play in creating intergenerational communities and conversations between educators, students and caregivers. This guide can help you build community and start these conversations in an equitable way. learningforjustice.org/magazine/publi…

Today's PSA: "Learning Loss" is a made-up construct and only serves to deflate students, educators, and caregivers. It invalidates their hard work and resiliency, ignores all the learning that happened, and adds unnecessary stress. #remotelearning #education

Zaretta Hammond: When our vocabulary expands, we become better thinkers, stronger readers, and more powerful writers. Why? Because words themselves are a form of background knowledge.

I got this from a former student this morning. I only share this because of historical dislike of grades/assessment. He failed the exam. I would have failed as a human to shut doors.

By looking through the lens of neuroscience, Hammond helps us understand why many students simply haven’t responded to the kinds of interventions many schools put in place for them. @Ready4Rigor #brainbasedlearning #culturallyresponsiveteaching buff.ly/3cnyn03

We all know what it feels like to be unwelcomed and welcomed. Don't create classroom spaces that you wouldn't want to be a student in. #HipHopEd

"Energy is all around me. I was looking at everything that has energy. I was like I am energy. I can pull from that. I'm welcoming that. I'm summoning that." Thank you Lyschel Shipp for grounding me in this space right now đź’• Vera Naputi #hiphoped #WomensHistoryMonth

Progress isn’t always about getting better. Sometimes it’s about bouncing back. Success is not only the peaks you reach—it’s the valleys you conquer. Every experience of enduring adversity and overcoming obstacles is a meaningful accomplishment.   Resilience is a form of growth.

As conditions worsen in the US my hope lies w the youth. I believe they will reject racism, efforts to deny human rights and blatant disregard for the environment. My generation must stand w them but it’s their turn to lead.

Students are constantly feeling rushed. Before they’re able to master a skill or concept, they get assessed and are told to move on. It leads to high anxiety and a low sense of self worth. We need to worry less about “staying on pace” and care more about depth of understanding.

Just read “Eleven Minutes: A Phone Call with Kobe Bryant” by Jason Reynolds News to my 10th graders, and this is the quietest and most focused this class has ever been.
