Good piece from Ambrose on semi-conductors, drawing on a new Centre for Policy Studies report telegraph.co.uk/business/2023/…
Good piece by Gerard B Lyons on his new Centre for Policy Studies report with Zachary Spiro cityam.com/in-the-scrambl…
My piece in City A.M. on the back of a Centre for Policy Studies report I’ve co-authored with Zachary Spiro on how the Government can support the UK’s semiconductor industry, with a market-led approach. In short, the UK should not and cannot join the subsidy arms race

Huge thank you to Alicia Kearns MP for writing the foreword, the Centre for Policy Studies and Robert Colvile for publishing and to my co-author, Gerard B Lyons (who doesn't have twitter)

This is so important from Robert Colvile. As the CPS sets out today, if we want to bring industries like semi conductors to the UK, let’s focus less on subsidy races and more on bringing their set-up costs and complexity down - eg through planning reform!

As Gerard B Lyons and Zachary Spiro say in the (excellent) report, we can't beat Taiwan/US/Holland by trying to out-subsidise them. But we can't build the research-intensive industries of the future without making it easier (or, y'know, possible) to build research facilities.
