After Alekhine, the first dominant reigning World Champion was Karpov. He set the bar so high and after him only Kasparov and Carlsen managed to reach it.

I only played in one event together with Karpov, in Bastia in 2002. I will never forget how instead of waiting in a very long queue to go to the men's bathroom, he simply went to the women's, which was empty. I followed suit.
