A Paralympic commentator just said the following: "You stop seeing the wheelchair pretty quickly when you watch this sport." Do. Not. Say. This. It's ableist AF.

The presumed inferiority, unworthiness, inability and incompetency of disabled people by others is what really holds disabled people back. Ableism is real. Ableism is harmful. Ableism devalues and dehumanizes disabled people.

Me, a wheelchair user: “Do you have an adjustable exam table.” Medical staff: “You have to let us know in advance if you have special needs. We’d have referred you to someone else.” Access is not a “special need.” Doctors and hospitals need to own up to their responsibilities.

Too often, inaccessibility for disabled people has been viewed as something that disabled people have to overturn rather than a wrong committed by society, government and the private sector that must be fixed by those who exclude.
