A number of African grain markets are hitting the wall when surpluses are generated and prices drop. Policy intervention and lack of infrastructure are hampering exports. The same elements cause prices to spike in years of drought. This is a major cause for price volatility.

Today's CEC report estimates a further increase of 6.9% in SA's soya crop, bringing the harvest to new record of 1.9mil tons. BFAP expects local prices to trade closer to export parity levels, which will support processing margins. SA's processing capacity is well over 2mil tons.

Based on latest CEC estimate of 195000tons, canola is heading for another record harvest. If these favourable weather conditions continue in September, canola will be one of the fastest growing sectors in agriculture, doubling production in just three years.
