The new National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales has been announced today. National Board member and Firearms & Taser Lead Steve Hartshorn has been confirmed as the second National Chair to be voted in by police officers in England and Wales.

Too many officers are struggling to pay the bills. 9% of Durham Constabulary officers state they almost never have enough money to cover all their essentials. A decade+ of effective Government pay cuts have taken their toll. #PayOurPolice

The Police Federation of England and Wales is demanding a 17% pay increase for police officers. New data from a Social Market Foundation report shows police officer pay in the UK has declined substantially since 2000, lagging behind inflation and other public sector jobs.

Independent research has shown that between 2000-2022 public sector and protective service workers saw a real-terms pay rise of between 1-14%, but the police remain an outlier for the same period, having faced a real-terms pay cut of 17%.
