This papal bull (Cotton MS Vitellius B IV/I) is one of the most important documents in British history. Given by Pope Leo X in 1521, it conferred on Henry VIII the title Defender of the Faith, a title used to this day by Queen Elizabeth II and now HM King Charles III.

Like many of the manuscripts in the Cotton collection, it was badly burned in the Ashburnham House Fire of 1731. With multi-spectral imaging, we can now uncover many of the previously hidden details, names, seals, and signatures it contains.
