3/3 And finally, Is there a better way to fish? Yes. Move away from mixed stock fisheries to harvesting at the river where salmon originate

This is also extremely worrying for Okanagan streams that rely on snowmelt for flow in the summer. While I was at an environmental flows conference last month I learned that many of these streams are already overallocated for agriculture. No snow = no water for fish or people.

Dark extinction describes the loss of species before they are discovered & named. We are watching the decline of , one of the most well-studied & understood species in the world. Raincoast Conservation Foundation scientists and others are calling this a 'bright extinction.'

Peter Corkeron NOAA Fisheries Thanks Peter. We felt it was important to contrast Boehm’s concept of dark extinction (losing species before they’re even documented scientifically) with the populations we risk losing in plain sight

And Oceans Initiative new term, 'bright extinction' -
the noticeable and documented precipitous decline of a data-rich population toward extinction

NOAA Fisheries gift to the world - a perfect descriptor for data-rich conservation failure.
