I guess that 'we all work together' doesn't include paying attention to new research showing that weak rope isn't going to solve the entanglement problem for #rightwhales .

Another entangled #rightwhale
...and most recently seen gear-free in Cape Cod Bay in March 2024.
So this must be gear from New England. We're way way over allowable deaths and injuries from US gear for this year. It's April...

At some point, perhaps some journalist(s) will start asking the hard questions about what's going on inside NOAA Fisheries that leads to the inaction driving #rightwhales towards #extinction
Not holding my breath
And now this news is out - fisheries.noaa.gov/national/endan…
Yet another dead right whale. A female who had a calf this year. Hoping for the calf's sake that it died instantly.
NOAA Fisheries #rightwhale #brightextinction
And Oceans Initiative new term, 'bright extinction' -
the noticeable and documented precipitous decline of a data-rich population toward extinction
NOAA Fisheries gift to the world - a perfect descriptor for data-rich conservation failure.
Study a lot, do bugger all...
Excellent work led by Oceans Initiative
The kicker - Preventing extinction is still possible but will require greater sacrifices on regional ocean use, urban development, and land use practices, than would have been the case had threats been mitigated even a decade earlier.
A step to addressing the #enshittification of science

Journal editors are resigning en masse: what do these group exits achieve? nature.com/articles/d4158…
The same stages of denial apply to wildlife extinctions
We've worked our way down to number 6 for #rightwhales
Expecting 7 soon.
And if other government agencies learn from NOAA Fisheries and put nothing in writing? Including never emailing to say - use my personal email.
And retaliating against those who refuse?
Maybe then someone will notice that's a problem with secrecy in government
More technophilic #hopium

There's a 'don't think of an elephant' problem with framing these stories. They always start with 'could save'
Thanks Terry Hughes for flagging it
Please, Sabrina Weiss revisit this in a few years. Did this work?
