The Virgin in the Garden quartet has long been a foundation stone for me. I have read and reread them throughout my adult life. I’ll be thinking of Byatt today, quietly grateful for all the gifts she has given me.

An incredible setting for today’s @poetrysociety Foyle Young Poet’s Award - wonderful to talk with all these young writers about how their writing & reading shapes the way they are in the world - & that a love for poetry can co-exist happily alongside a love for maths & science!

It’s fantastic to hear from not only the incredible young people performing poems, but also their teachers: being part of a supportive, creative competition that understands teachers’ lives and “takes words off the page and into hearts and minds” 💚

It’s wonderful that at the Poetry By Heart launch you can hear a pin drop when poems are being spoken - but the cheers and shared lines are raucous and loud. We’re “launching poems into the air” together, as Julie Blake says 💫

Rooting for all teachers & students waiting for exam results. A stressful moment. And mixed aftermath. Whatever happens - sending solidarity & empathy. 30 + summers as teacher, I remember this time. Plug into networks as & when needed & persevere through grade boundary pain.

We can't say it much better than this. Congratulations to the teachers who have worked so hard to get their students to this point, supporting them to be the creative thinkers and innovators of the future.

Universities UK vivienne stern No mention of the Humanities in the report, despite creative and analytical thinking being named as the most important skills looked for by employers - Humanities graduates are experts in creative, analytical, and critical thinking….

One of the best parts of my job is getting to look at the submissions to this prize, especially bearing in mind that these brilliant, imaginative, assured collections are all the poets' first. What a privilege it is to celebrate them. We'll announce the shortlist on 8 Sept!

It's fantastic to see how students respond to film/TV adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Last year's winning essay argued that Almereyda's 2000 Hamlet 'place[s] Ophelia at the heart of the narrative, allowing her to be more than simply a victim of patriarchal oppression'.
