A beautiful glass bowl, made in a pale bluey-green grass with a ridged pattern all around it. Made about 2000 years ago, probably in Italy, it is a wonderful example of Roman glasswork in the early Imperial period Archaeology

Bite-sized hisssstory: This impressive lararium (shrine) features two rather handsome looking serpents — complete with stuccoed heads and flicking tongues. Leafy foliage and chirping birds complete the picture.

The tombstone of a gladiator named Anicetus, who according to the inscription fought with a sword & specialised in attacks. It was dedicated to him by an expert gladiator & instructor, who had presumably trained Anicetus during his time in the arena

Loving my latest treasure - a 3D printed & painted dodecahedron replica, made by a friend of my brother-in-law who is fascinated by these things (quite understandably) - now I just have to conclusively discover what they were once used for... Archaeology

One thing Mary Beard said that has really stuck with me: When folks say they want to ‘restore the Roman Empire’, they always assume they’ll be the senate, never the enslaved.

A tombstone dedicated to a soldier named Gaius Saufeius, who died at the age of 40 after 22 years in the Army with the 9th Legion. He was originally from Heraclea (Macedonia) but died in Lincoln (Britain), probably in the first decades after the conquest of Britain.

A 2,000 year-old Hellenistic mosaic glass bowl made of translucent dark blue glass with white spirals. Looks as if it contains the cool blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea! 🌊🌊🌊

A beautiful glass 'handkerchief' bowl made of a light blue-green glass, with an unusual wavy shape all round. This piece was made about 1600-1700 years ago, but in many ways looks like a piece of modern art (Chihuly, or similar)
