A really insightful thread from Gareth K. Thomas ❤️‍🩹. Those who say that they aren’t equipped to support trauma will then belittle someone with lived experience for not being a teacher. Doing what we’ve always done might feel safer but it will lead to more misunderstandings and stress.

A year ago I posted this. My dear friend Barney Angliss shared Rumi's poem with me, about meeting in the field - the middle, human space. It's not the easy place to be, but undertaking the daily human work to share this space better, is totally worthwhile. #FlipTheNarrative 💜

We all face struggles, big and small. Being gentle with ourselves,self-compassion allows us to face these with greater resilience .We can learn to tune out the critical inner voice that holds us back and establish a healthy sense of self. Sending love #Mentalhealth

Be gentle with yourself. You're doing your best, and it's okay not to be perfect. Treat yourself with the same kindness you'd show a friend. Remember, you're not alone. We all struggle sometimes. Be patient with yourself and your journey. #edutwitter #KindnessMatters #SelfLove

Today we’ll be delivering this message to parliament to be sent to this young person’s MP. It’s just one of 700 messages submitted to us by young people and their allies. MPs need to know what young people are going through. It’s time to give them a reality check.

A very clear example of the ableism that autistic children face when their thoughts, feelings, and views are explored. Misunderstandings lead to negative, inflexible, and stress inducing expectations.

So frustrating that yet another government prioritises blaming and threatening parents/carers. It won’t be back-to-school week for “all children” when some don’t have a school place, let alone those who are misplaced, off rolled, or feeling unsafe because of ableist expectations.

There is so much emphasis on assessments & therapies by external agencies. Everyday relationships have the power to create safety and support regulation. It costs nothing to be kind, playful, accepting, curious, empathetic, predictable, flexible & proactive. #FlipTheNarrative

This will resonate for many who don’t have a school place, those who attend while distressed and overwhelmed, and those who can’t attend at all. They need expectations which don’t set them up for failure. They need you to know that it’s “can’t”, not “won’t”. #FlipTheNarrative

Something to take you into the autumn and beyond ….. be kind to you, treat yourself like a good friend, forgive your mistakes, it’s ok to have bad days, celebrate the wins big or small… #Mentalhealth

“Look at the current news cycle: private schools & VAT vs state school & absence. The former framed as hard-working victims; the latter, irresponsible, feckless families” Important thread from Terri White - we need to consider entrenched biases, blame games & systemic failures.

Awful situation and one is which is faced by too many parents and carers. Attendance supposedly matters and yet barriers to attendance are rife thanks to nonsensical and arbitrary decisions.
