A study published in Nature Energy finds that although only 3% of all trips by UK residents are long distance (>50 miles one-way) they account for 69% of passenger travel-related carbon emissions. go.nature.com/4cOOAb1

Not surprising, but yikes: "2.7% of a person’s trips are for long distance travel (>50 miles one-way), but they account for 61.3% of the miles and 69.3% of the greenhouse gas emissions from passenger travel." nature.com/articles/s4156…

I actually find this to be encouraging news. The number of long (passenger) trips is low, and their impact is high. This, I wager, is easier to challenge than daily mobility behaviors, which I'd suggest are subject to habit-forming and car-as-default from long-distance trips.

Only 2.7% of travel in England is for long-distance trips, but accounts for 69.3% of passenger travel emissions. Read this new study on long-distance travel and how it impacts #carbon emissions. Zia Wadud Adeel Muhammad Jillian Anable Institute for Transport Studies at Leeds lght.ly/d0c1fcn

The average person’s travel emissions have decreased from 2007, but remain higher than in 1997. How do rare, long-distance trips impact a person’s transport greenhouse gas emissions? Flying for leisure and social purposes are the largest contributors to long-distance travel emissions, and these miles are also increasing. This new study from Zia Wadud Adeel Muhammad Jillian Anable Institute for Transport Studies at Leeds to find out more. lght.ly/mpdh6i6

New paper by Vera Huwe on the political economy of aviation & climate, with a little help from myself. This is such a great paper and I have been looking forward to its publication. Hopefully it will get the attention it deserves.

Folks who care deeply about reducing the environmental impact of travel should have new research from Jillian Anable, Zia Wadud, and Adeel Muhammad on their radar. Punchline: long distance trips deserve greater attention in our carbon reduction efforts. My graphical summary: 🧵

No AIR PLANE? Should a plane be considered a mode in the urban transport hierarchy? I believe so! Flying is the most energy and carbon intensive among all modes! so airplanes would be sitting at the bottom of this graph!
