Happy 100th birthday to Jimmy Carter, a man of character. A decent, kind, compassionate president who sought peace & justice. In his farewell address he pledged that once more he would return to the title superior to President—that of CITIZEN & what a stellar citizen he has been!

Always glad to join Kasie Hunt CNN This Morning with Audie Cornish because Kasie loves history! As she said: "We can’t really do what I try to do everyday without having a deeper understanding of what’s happened before — the history that came before us." This is true for everyone! #theleadershipjourney

.Doris Kearns Goodwin talks to Kasie Hunt about historical parallels between Trump's inaugural address & past presidents: "Franklin Roosevelt always talked, if he could, in one- syllable words people could connect to... There is a sense of, we're talking to people where they are."

History matters: the Civil Service system, merit-based & nonpartisan, was instituted in the 1880s to replace the spoils system set up by President Jackson, which saw party loyalists, friends & family get government jobs on the basis of WHO they knew, rather than WHAT they knew.

I appreciate joining Anderson Anderson Cooper 360° to discuss the importance of learning & understanding our history—all of it. It is disturbing that in 1963 (not 1863!) the Children's Crusade faced assault. But that action fired the conscience of America and led to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

I wish Dick Goodwin could have seen this beautiful tribute by Brian Williams. 7 years ago today Dick died. While I miss him so very much, he stays alive in my heart & mind through the stories I tell. He was funny, principled, passionate & believed deeply in the promise of America
