Chandra Shaw Reading and writing aren’t inherently engaging. I’m not talking about fluff stuff; I’m asking how are students going to learn to do sustained reading and writing when engagement is prioritized.

We know it can be frustrating working in a school and we may get annoyed with each other. Remember teachers we are mocked by social media, parents… we don’t need to do it to each other. If your co-worker is trying to build relationships with kids and teach - give them grace.

You have some colleagues who are barely hanging on. They’re just trying to keep their head above water.

But you might not know which ones… so I recommend being gracious with all of them.

As a teacher whose job it is to help bridge the gap between high school and college, I’m loudly advising students that they shouldn’t go into debt for a school that will arrest, tear gas, and suspend them for exercising their constitutional rights.
