Scientists from PHIVOLCS-DOST, the Philippines organization responsible for seismic and volcano hazard monitoring, explain what's going on with offshore earthquakes not far from the metro Manila area. temblor.net/temblor/shaken…

We see you, Aotearoa. A M6.9 (prelim.) earthquake ~140 km offshore of the southernmost South Island, New Zealand, and widely felt across the South and North Islands, as detected on Seismology Research Centre seismic network in southeast Australia.

A M7.7 followed ~11 mins later by a M6.4 aftershock - still a strong earthquake and likely damaging in itself - in Myanmar/ Burma about 40 mins ago. It took ~12 minutes for the associated waveforms to arrive at our recorders in the Seismology Research Centre network in southeast Australia.

This morning a M4.6 (prelim.) earthquake near Singleton was felt across eastern NSW. Our latest analysis here at Seismology Research Centre now has this as M4.9 with a depth of <4 km - comparable to the depths of earthquakes at the nearby Mt Arthur Coal Mine in 2024. abc.net.au/news/2025-04-2…
