1/ Just spoke with Carol (@debateheroes) — the builder behind Think2Earn, an open-source brain-computer interface project now focused on non-invasive glucose monitoring using spectroscopy. It began with an idea to type by thought after a wrist injury — and evolved into a tool

2/ Think2Earn’s approach: → Use light spectroscopy to measure glucose levels through the skin → Build fully on open hardware and open-source tools → Explore ways to reward people for contributing training data

3/ Carol’s philosophy: “If you build in the open and give knowledge to humanity, you accelerate the space more than if you keep it secret.” He works directly with university researchers, improving and testing their open hardware designs in practice.

4/ Building open has clear upsides: - Community feedback and collaboration - Access to grants and hackathons - Alignment with decentralized values But most VCs still prefer closed systems that monetize user data - a trade-off he’s not willing to make.

5/ He’s aiming for sustainability through hardware sales for research and grants, not VC rounds. “We don’t have much time on Earth. You might as well try to advance it.”

6/ A believer in d/acc — safe, decentralized acceleration — Carol’s excited by Vitalik’s call for open, verifiable hardware and hopes the Ethereum Foundation will fund it like open software.

7/ He also sees a role for governments: “If the NHS can pay people to walk to reduce diabetes, why not use open tech for better public outcomes?”

The next gig is for my fellow #diabetics carol 🦇🔊 is working on a new type of CGM and I will be his guinea pig as one the first diabetics to put it on trial. It looks a little intimidating but its all in the name of (open source) science and medicine. Stay tuned!
