We watched this little beast stash at least 7 mice in 30 minutes under the visitor centre cladding at RSPB Lakenheath Fen . Is this the Halloween version of #givingnatureahome?
A proper Fens sunset RSPB Lakenheath Fen and tawny owls getting frisky in the woods as we shut up the office at the end of a long day sedge cutting.
Sunrise RSPB Lakenheath Fen , booming bitterns, bugling cranes and sky dancing marsh harriers. Nice!
Great weather and good wildlife for my favourite day of the year the #SCCS student visit. Not everyday you get to talk bitterns and tigers RSPB Lakenheath Fen #sccs2022
Trip out RSPB Titchwell Marsh saw and heard some great wildlife skydancing harriers, godwits, avocets, the husky voices of Brent geese, grey wagtail and finished off with a very nice hot cheese and ham baguette. Very nice!
Magical morning RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Early start for the booming bittern survey. Mist on the reedbed, then brilliant sunshine. Lots of boomers, crane flying over, cuckoo, common tern, harriers passing prey. Nice!
Bittern and harrier survey this morning RSPB Lakenheath Fen . I had both and crane, hobby and GWE. Highlights though were the purple heron and small, probable Montague's harrier circling high with 2 marsh harriers before drifting off north
Big day yesterday two crane chicks RSPB Lakenheath Fen fledged! This is trail camera footage from last week but on Thursday we saw them flying for the first time. That is 20 chicks fledged on the reserve in 16 years of breeding after 400 years of absence from the Fens. Result!
This is from two days ago, watching how mum/dad do it! Now the chicks are flying there is a chance of seeing them flying about on the reserve, but remember they are shy, secretive birds. Ask in the visitor centre RSPB Lakenheath Fen RSPB RSPB England
After 8 months of drought, our winter abstraction can started today to refill the reserve RSPB Lakenheath Fen which is most welcome as water levels are still the lowest we have had since the reserve was created in 1995
Abstracting from the Little Ouse now for 2 days and the first reedbed now has water in the pools. Levels are now what you would see in August in an average dry year having come up 60cm after putting in 15,000 m3. Will need another 70cm to get to winter level RSPB Lakenheath Fen
Bearded tits have been showing really well RSPB Lakenheath Fen in this frosty weather. Best spot has been on the stone track between Mere Hide and Joist Fen viewpoint. Why are they bearded and not moustachioed tits.....?
Fish survey RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Good no’s of Rudd, Roach, Pike, Perch & Tench (don’t you just love a Tench). Interesting distribution linked to connectivity, habitat quality & last years low water levels. Next, will compare this with 2023 Bittern breeding distribution. #23in23
Out RSPB Lakenheath Fen before sunrise this morning for bittern survey. Had a nice boomer from my spot and another 4 elsewhere on the reserve. Highlights were these two chasing, the long-tails at my viewpoint and a smattering of sedge warblers singing in the reedbed.
BBC local weather setting up to broadcast live from RSPB Lakenheath Fen yesterday evening
Last year we visited 29 of the best UK reedbeds to assess their condition and future prospects for Bittern. The results are published in British Birds this month. The key findings are as follows (with appreciation and thanks to all the receptive site staff). 🧵 1/6
