Energy gang's latest ep (Jigar Shah Stephen Lacey Tim Hade) Ex-DOE Director admits $500 Billion of utility spending is 'optional'. IOUs turn that into $1 Trillion extracted from ratepayers. Complicit clean energy KOLs won't say for-profit monopolies are the problem. smh

China ≠ just coal plants and solar exports. The deeper shift: electrifying everything it can. Strategic, because China relies on imported fossil fuels. Coal is still king in the power mix—for now. But the balance is changing year by year.

Delighted to be giving a keynote entitled "GET REAL" to S&P Global's Power Traders forum here in D.C. this Friday, about why the overforecast of demand is problematic & what policies can inject some reality into this sector. Here's a sneak peak!🧵

Expensive! US cost of gas plants jumps to $4,000/kw to $4,500/kw with US fuel cost and pipeline cost included. Captive customers bear fuel cost risks too in monopoly utility gas plants! Expensive, risky deal for consumers. utilitydive.com/news/natural-g…

Building new natural gas plants is risky for consumers in part because the fuel costs are extremely volatile and pass through 100% to consumers: "The average natural gas price at the U.S. benchmark is on track to be 54 percent higher this year than in 2024," Politico writes.

Electricity costs are higher than they need to be and trending higher. The largest utility in Texas, Oncor, is asking the PUC for nearly a billion dollar increase per year. The lack of any sort of price discovery for alternatives to distribution infrastructure spending is a

In 2023, the price of industrial power in AEP (Ohio) territory was 9.3 cents/kWh. In 2024 it was 15.2 cents. And that's just from 1.5% load growth. Also surprisingly, the delivery portion of that actually went down by 0.2 cents. It's supply costs that shot up.

Goldman Sachs sees #natgas Henry Hub price at $2.70. LNG excess supply is unlikely to be fully absorbed by demand. Bears will love this 🐻 🔥

Ed Zitron Anthropic is using the entire Amazon data center campus in New Carlisle, IN (2.2 GW when completed). Amazon/Anthropic didn't pay the hundreds of millions in transmission costs to connect the data center to the grid; instead, will be socialized across all I&M ratepayers
