Critical step to #MakeEBFMWork as the UK announces a domestic closure to sandeel fishing. Fish species like sandeel (that are central to the diet of many struggling, charismatic predators) need cautious management & this is a move in the right direction: gov.uk/government/new…

Puffins and porpoises just gained much needed protections. Defra UK and @ScotgovMarine announced plans to permanently close sandeel fisheries in the UK, showing a commitment to North Sea ecosystem health. #EBFM #30by30 ow.ly/FzP250QwvNy

🚨 EXPOSED: the expansion of Norway’s salmon farming industry - which drives the extraction of nearly 2 million tonnes of whole fish from the wild each year - comes at the expense of communities in the Global South. Our new report featured in the Financial Times: buff.ly/3OoWy18

For healthy ocean ecosystems, we need all of the info. To get that, we need to ask the right questions. We created a checklist for fisheries managers to ensure they ask for all the scientific information they need for sustainable fisheries. 👇 pew.org/4chpBxB

.Lenfest Ocean Program recently published key findings from their working group on ‘Benchmarks for Ecosystem Assessment’ which provide guidance for practical implementation of #EBFM, particularly in incorporating #ecological indicators like plankton populations. bit.ly/43bv9pm

When making decisions that affect #nature, governments should be asking scientists bigger, bolder and broader questions. Fisheries managers specifically shouldn't just ask "how much yield can we get?" but "how do we restore biodiversity while optimising seafood production?".

We're pleased to announce that a new working definition of #DestructiveFishing has been drafted following a rigorous consultation process. This will help to inform global policy discussions, while meaningfully supporting countries to prohibit destructive fishing practices🐟

Seafood retailers need to make protecting pristine ecosystems a priority by refusing to buy farmed salmon grown in protected areas or in production areas that have problems with pollution, fish diseases and farmed fish escapees. I write in SeafoodSource seafoodsource.com/news/aquacultu…

Forage fish make up ~20% of ocean fish catch, largely ground up into feed for fish farms. Fish farming now produces more seafood than catching wild fish. ⬆️ Fish farming = ⬆️ Feed demand = ⬆️ Need for strong, ecosystem-based management of forage fish. pewtrusts.org/en/research-an…

Intensive aquaculture of carnivorous fish is not sustainable 👇. It also impacts the most vulnerable people by depleting local fish stocks and disrupting traditional livelihoods. #SustainableFishing #SSF #FoodSecurity #RiseUp4theOcean

As changing stock sizes will cause changes to predator prey dynamics we ask: Can we simultaneously adopt the precautionary approach for multiple stocks in the North Sea? I'll be presenting this next Monday at ICES sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
