Reading the Montreal Gazette from 1827, and much space is given over to trash-talking between the chess players of Montreal and their rivals in Quebec City. I'm happy to cast aspersions on historical figures: These guys were almost definitely insufferable.

When the banks of the Little River in Griffintown flooded in the spring of 1827, some boys hired a boat & sailed through the streets, serenading local "beauties" w/fifes &bugles.A rare glimpse into early 19th C. street life is today's reward for tedium of combing thru archives.

One of the fun things about spending the first 22 years of my life in Quebec before emigrating to Ontario is that the existence of the August long weekend always comes as a complete shock when I’m informed of it three days ahead of time.

On the train into Toronto- passengers are a mix of people going to Massey Hall to see Elvis Costello and the goons going to see Motley Crüe at the hockey arena. It’s like the Jets and the Sharks in here. We’ll soon start snapping our fingers at each other.

With four beautiful songs and a title that references Lucien Febvre and E.P. Thompson, what's not to love about Paul Cargnello's new e.p., History From Below. Buy It! The money goes to Resilience Montreal . paulcargnello.bandcamp.com/album/history-…

I had a great visit to the new Modern Literature and Culture Research Centre on Yonge Street- a buzzing hive of research on modernity, literature, and history! Thanks to Irene Gammel and Jason Wang for their hospitality!
