The informal sector employs 73% of Zimbabwe's labour. 52% are women and 34% are extremely poor. Conditions of service and social protection are poor. Among other things we need social assistance, social insurance and a pension scheme to cover these workers.

One of the key drivers for Zimbabwe's economic recovery is mining. Yet in most mining concerns workers do not have decent wages, health and safety facilities including protective clothing as well as medical care for the injured. Supervion and unionization key

Workers are an integral and indispensable part of the creation of the wealth of the nation. They are therefore entitled to a fairer share of the very wealth they create in the form of wages, social protection and other benefits. Collective labour power is key.

The conditions of service of the Zimbabwean workers are beyond bad. The situation is worse for our pensioners because from their payouts, they can not afford the basic necessities of life. Critical urgent interventions are needed.

All Zimbabweans need a stronger economy and a stronger currency. All Zimbabweans want a proactive monetary authority. However, many Zimbabweans need to be convinced that the new currency does not amount to the simple removal of Zeros from the current Zim$.

On 2 April, the MDC Shadow Cabinet had its inaugural meeting. It resolved to oppose the intended mutilation of our constitution, politicisation of food aid, entrenchment of inequality, and corruption. Inter alia, it restated that education must be free.
