We are relieved to hear that President of Zimbabwe will not seek a third term but will respect the constitution. We hope the president will also resist the plans to remove delimitation and voter registration functions from ZEC to people directly appointed by him.

All Zimbabweans need a stronger economy and a stronger currency. All Zimbabweans want a proactive monetary authority. However, many Zimbabweans need to be convinced that the new currency does not amount to the simple removal of Zeros from the current Zim$.

On 2 April, the MDC Shadow Cabinet had its inaugural meeting. It resolved to oppose the intended mutilation of our constitution, politicisation of food aid, entrenchment of inequality, and corruption. Inter alia, it restated that education must be free.

Claims by Minister Ziyambi that there is an agreement in Parliament to effect constitutional changes to deal with elections if true shows a serious anti-people collusion. We challenge the opposition MPs to oppose these. The Constitution is sacrosanct.

No to retrogressive constitutional amendments: NERA is totally opposed to proposals to have voter registration and delimitation functions to be transferred to bodies appointed by the executive. This is exactly what Zimbabweans rejected in the 2013 Referendum.
