Happy International Women and Girls in Science Day! Here are some photos of three Rock Stars on the G-049 field team in #Antarctica last year. This #NSFfunded grant focuses on training undergraduates in polar field work to diversify the next generation of polar scientists.

Finished up Aluminum checks in the lab this week. Waiting on results to find out if our quartz is clean and ready to send to the #PRIMElab at Purdue University

The lab has been busy this week! We’re working on glacial tills from #Antarctica for salt concentrations, and #granite from Sardinia Italy for cosmogenic Be-10. This week we did #surfactant separations on the quartz and put them in HF. Next week we’ll do Al-checks on them.

Alessandro’s paper based on his MS project and our 2019 field work is out! He mapped these landslides and we used Be-10 to get mean ages of 7.7 and 7 ka. Landslides were probably due to permafrost degradation and not paraglacial processes. Great story!

Snowy days on campus and busy days in the lab. The samples are granites from #Sardinia for a project about #tafoni erosion rates. We want #quartz from them for cosmogenic Be-10. In the last photo they are in HCl to dissolve fluorides. 2 of them look really clean, but 4 don’t :(

Day 4 highlights from COP include a lot of youth! A great panel hosted by Peru on young ocean advocates, getting to watch our own CLA students give a press release, and meeting students from Tufts and Indiana U. And I got to give a talk at the #ICCI #Cryosphere pavilion.

Day 3 of #COP28 highlights include hearing from 7 US senators ( #chirpchirp Senator Brian Schatz), a great panel on the #cryosphere in the Himalaya, beer made from reclaimed sewage in Singapore, and our own students on a panel! Plus Russian permafrost and nuclear power, what a day!

Day 2 of #COP28 was great! Saw some great talks, round tables with students and even attended some of the negotiations. Lots of talk about #consensus . Yes, that’s me “observing”behind the US negotiator so I got to be on the big screen!
