I'm getting really tired of hearing church leaders say "I had a moral failure" or "an inappropriate relationship" or engaged in a "secret sin". Folks that is gaslighting-what they aren't saying is "I abused someone, I sexually assaulted someone" and "I deeply injured someone".

Clericalism is the elevation and veneration of church leaders their ideas and agenda to the exclusion of the needs, wishes, and wants of congregants. It is what keeps too many of us centering abusers and excluding and blaming victims. The "ism" that is the church's problem only.

Aside from our national politics, I'm truly hopeful about the future of faith. I keep having conversations with people who have experienced so much religious trauma, but the healing they are findings makes them authentic, kind, and someone you want to be with.

Religious institutions try to shut down necessary dialogue about clericalism, abuse, and consent by shifting the focus to gossip and slander. This is to bypass our healthy reactions of being betrayed, angry, and disgusted, and muffles dissent and our demand for accountability.

The Waco Police Department is listening to survivors of adult clergy sexual abuse and charging their offender. Texas is a state where adult clergy sexual abuse is a crime. We need more lawmakers in other places to follow suit. See this story theguardian.com/us-news/articl…
