Today Protection Approaches's Kate Ferguson will give evidence to Foreign Affairs Committee on the crisis in Sudan, part of the brilliant line up below. Read the #UKMAprev Working Group letter released today to inform discussions - covered in The Guardian: theguardian.com/world/2023/jun… Tune in from 3pm 👇
Four years ago, nearly to the day, Maddy Crowther & I told the Foreign Office to prioritse its atrocity prevention capabilties in Sudan theguardian.com/commentisfree/… Today we're giving evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee on the dreadful, forseeable crisis unfolding Tune in at 3pm
.Maddy Crowther from Waging Peace 🧡 warns Darfur can’t be seen as separate from what’s happening in Khartoum. The scale of the violence is truly catastrophic - hearing from UK Sudanese community on Sunday, people had 8 or 10 or 5 family members each die in Darfur.
.Maddy Crowther: Other than warnings, UK FO put all eggs in the framework agreement. Misguided hope that the generals wil give up power, esp. in light of civil society warnings they were leaving Khartoum because they smell war in the air. How did FO not see the warning signs?
.Chris Bryant asks whether 97% aid cuts for Sudan was wise? .Maddy Crowther: we coordinate a WG of those who work in/on Sudan and they weren’t offered with clear logic as to why cuts were being made or impact it would have on people.
.Maddy Crowther: People were saying transitional agreement was problematic for a long time. Anyone critical of framework agreement was dismissed, ignored or told they were not optimistic as they should be - they were excluded. UK should speak to different groups, accept plurality
.Maddy Crowther / Waging Peace 🧡 closing asks: It’s world refugee day. Protection of Sudanese people can begin at home; the UK can better discharge responsibilities towards them, hear their claims fairly, with better packages of inclusion and support incl. if they were evacuated
More coverage of yesterday’s Foreign Affairs Committee urgent session on Sudan - with quotes from Maddy Crowther Alicia Kearns MP and yours truly. #KeepEyesOnSudan
