Putting the CORN back into corncrake.
It's a long time since crops were planted at any scale on Toraigh.
We liaised with the local community about the traditionally planted fields and are bringing them back to LIFE!
Now it's happening thanks to LIFE Programme
Lapwing, or Pilibín as Gaeilge, is Ireland's national bird. I visited Cooldross in Wicklow to see National Parks and Wildlife Service's Breeding Lapwing Protection Project. Ground-nesting birds such as Lapwing are in decline in Ireland. Their nests are vulnerable to predators such as foxes and badgers.
This is a significant step towards halting the decline of our breeding waders and the many other ground-nesting meadow birds associated with these habitats.
We wish the project well and look forward to working with them.

Four LIFE Programme projects?
All in the same place?
With our reputation?
Amazing to meet with LIFE Raft, LIFE on Machair / SAOL ar an Mhacaire and Orkney Native Wildlife Project yesterday on wonderful Ratlin Island.
We heard crakers too!
Brilliant work by RSPB NI
A reward for months of hard work during the off season, or a pure chance arrival?
Either way, we are delighted to have a male #Corncrake back on the reserve this week.
