Here I am hovering above a massive Porites individual (likely Porites lobata) we encountered during a recent survey in #Boduthiladhunmathi in #Maldives. The happiness upon meeting such enormous individuals and healthy reefs are indescribable. #coralreefs #lifebelowwater

new work: designing a blueprint for reef survival, so many great authors, so many important statements, e.g. "climate mitigation is essential but insufficient to conserve reefs; we need biological, ecological, socio-economic adaptation"->Fig1 bit.ly/3ee7kUG Universität Konstanz

Although these corals are visibly indistinguishable even under a microscope, they are genetically distinct, a phenomenon called cryptic diversity. They thrive at distinct depths, have different spawning times, and don't interbreed like corals typically do. popsci.com/story/science/…

Very excited to share our recent paper! We show that considering variance in coral cover (not just average) can better inform spatial prioritisation of coral reefs for both conservation and restoration Maria Beger Catherine Kim, PhD @[email protected] Ove Hoegh-Guldberg sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Huge congrats to Meg Nolan on this publication on incorporating habitat variance in spatial prioritisation using data from the XL Catlin Seaview Survey in #TimorLeste. Freely available for the next month: authors.elsevier.com/c/1d1uW_9CgRjbl Underwater Earth #CoralTriangle #Conservation

Glad the #BMCEcoEvol photo competition has been able to promote these messages: Beautiful #coralreefs still exist! But, we need to act on climate & improve water quality or we risk losing these important ecosystems BMC Series Penn Biology CoralReefEcosystems au.news.yahoo.com/photo-of-jack-…

Now accepting abstracts for our session (IS01) at ASLO Ocean Sciences on the effects of marine heatwaves on #coralreefs! It's a 'hybrid' session, w/ options to present both virtually & in person. Abstracts due Sept 15. Veronica Radice | @drradice.bsky.social ASLO #OSM22

Congratulations to past honours student Michaela for the publication of her thesis in L&O! We found that tolerance to a highly variable environment does not infer resilience to future ocean warming & acidification. #CoralReports @CoralCoE @also_org aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ln…

So happy to see my past honours student’s first ever paper published! Important results suggesting that w/ future climate change, previous exposure to high environmental variability may not benefit coral calcification #CoralReports @CoralCoE ASLO aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ln…

New paper‼️ We took #corals from naturally variable & stable habiats & exposed them to future #climatechange. We found previous exposure to variability did not benefit corals, suggesting tolerance to current variability does not equal climate resilience aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ln…

Nice coverage of our paper on reforestation and coral reefs by Aimee Gabay. Controlling sediment runoff is a promising (and very challenging) strategy for improving the health of coral reef ecosystems around the world. CoralReefEcosystems Caitie Kuempel Simon Linke 🎤🐠 Ove Hoegh-Guldberg @UQ_CBCS
