A friend, late 50s, has been job searching since January. He started out interviewing for Head of Design jobs, eventually devolving to Retail Sales Associate, none of which panned out. Now he wants to focus on this random business idea, something about importing pastries from

I know several people that made great sacrifices (eg never lived in their dream neighborhood, limited social activities) in order max out their 401ks every year. Now facing retirement, they have no intention of EVER tapping that money. Monumentally stupid money management

Put an Airbnb up for sale in early ‘23. Got greedy, asked for $1.1m. Ended up selling for $600k. Put that money in the Nasdaq. Now it’s worth $950k. Not gonna cry if the new owner sells that property for $1.1m some day

Public Service Announcement. Billionaires regularly and reflexively claim to plan on leaving all their wealth to charity, it makes them seem virtuous. They are all lying

A friend celebrates milestone birthdays by inviting friends to an exotic destination and buying a block of hotel rooms, free to all attendees. One year logistics prevented this, everyone had to reserve their own room. To compensate, he gave every attendee a $1000 check at the

What do you tell someone who’s been looking for a job with no results? A good friend has been looking for 4+ months, is getting discouraged. He’s withdrawing from his 401k to get by. Now Chase Bank is suing him for his $10k in CC debt. He was making $140k a couple years ago.

A couple I know is turning their home into a “design house”. It’s where eight designers are each given a room to redo in their own style. Then tickets are sold to the public to tour the home (proceeds go to charity) All the materials and designer time is free. Worth it?

Cheat code: never look at the bill. Even when just with friends or colleagues. Just slap your card down Of course you’ll occasionally pay more (mistakes happen). But it’s worth the powerful signal you’ll be sending.

People that drive nice cars can, by and large, afford them. Someday there will be a medical advancement that cures people of assuming otherwise.

Professional advice: Moving out of NYC, if you must, is OK - but NOT a brag. You may have started a killer consulting practice, yoga studio or happy family…but it will always look like you couldn’t make it in the big city. Recall the city fondly and move on

As I recall from news accounts in the late 1980s, the professional class - doctors, lawyers etc - were fleeing NYC. Not because of crime or taxes per se, it was due to affordability. Only the hyper-wealthy (eg Wall St.) could remain. Some things never change.

I have a lot of friends going to Machu Picchu these days and furiously posting about it on social media. It looks boring af and very mid in terms of scenery. An awful lot of work for a mediocre payout. Am I missing something?

This will indebt people for their entire lives, make home prices even less affordable and virtually eliminate the building of equity. Yet… I want one. Rather desperately

This will only reduce payments on a $500k loan from $2684 to $2270 (5% interest rate). However, a 100 year mortgage reduces them to $2097! Do I hear 500?

I’m often stunned when people “confess” that they splurge $500+ per night on luxury hotels. That is not luxury and that is not a splurge. The chart below checks out. I have a friend who just spent $2k/night for a basic room at a high end hotel in Paris.
