We were inspired by the Jewish boy born to a refugee family in Glasgow, who never attended university, dreamt of diplomacy and wound up as a British ambassador, Arabist and Middle East expert - against all the odds. A particular Jewish story, but also, a universal British story.

It was a moment of celebration, reflection and pride. We celebrated the achievements of all who came before us, reflected on the challenges they overcame, and felt proud to continue the tradition of great 🇬🇧 Jewish diplomacy from Sir Horace Phillips to Dame Dame Melinda Simmons today.

Looking back, Sir Horace Phillips said "like a traditional Jew, I can only reflect on how proud my mother would have been". We hope this project would have made Sir Horace proud and that the Phillips Room inspires staff and visitors of all backgrounds to fulfil their potential.
