There sure is, players need effective practice design. Player development/practice through an ecological lens helps with this. When you train vs. air and expect it to translate to all the things that happen in a physical, unpredictable environment there is little to no transfer!

Giving time is one of the most rewarding ways to use your time. Provide value to others by:

Offering emotional support
Listening
Sharing knowledge
Teaching usable skills
Helping to build a professional network
Helping with physical tasks
Volunteering wherever & whenever you can

Not everyone who plays wants to play at the collegiate level. For most, having a great HS career while developing life/people skills, incredible drive & a great work ethic is enough. The kids who use what they learned as part of a team to succeed in life don’t get enough credit!

When a team’s best player(s) are the hardest workers, best examples, understand the importance and necessity of others roles, AND are the best teammates — that’s when you have a chance to have a special season.

Off Season: No more excuses about working out. Ultimately, it’s your team. Take ownership of it!

Great Team= Off season workouts are player led & productive

Good team= Only coaches get players excited about off season workouts

Bad team= Players hate & avoid off season workouts

Early sports success creates the impression of a high level of athleticism, but in reality youth sports generally lack any kind of real development of athleticism/skill. Give young athletes a fighting chance for their future by developing them, not labeling or categorizing them!

Watch out for those late developers!

Careful not to put too much stock in early developers

It’s not 10, 11, 12 that matters so much as how big a players heart is & how much they love & invest in the game

It’s not where you start, but where you finish that matters

Youth athletic parents:🤷🏻‍♂️

'Stats show that only about 10 % of elite 10-year-old athletes are still elite at age 18. Only 8 % of Nobel Prize winners & world champions were child prodigies. In fact, the only thing that early success guarantees is… early success' ~ John O'Sullivan

Most coaches aren’t even sure why they coach the way they do. Many just regurgitate what they were taught by someone else. The majority preach development, but have no idea what development even is! Check out & study theoretical frameworks for an eye opening approach to coaching!

The best way to measure success as a coach isn’t just wins. It’s doing life with players through texts, calls, coffee & catch up & sharing milestones. Whether you won or lost, you should strive to have players who want to share their lives with you long after competition is over!

Great coaches understand that it’s always about the players, not about you. How can it be about you when you’re asking your players to do 99% of the work to be successful? Your job is to provide the backbone for the team & if you put them first, they’ll want to provide the heart!

Most Youth AAU:

Very little development
Structured games
5v5 games
Part time coaches
Year round players
Bad practice to play ratio

For real improvement, try:

Prof development
Unstructured games
Small sided games
Professional coaches
Multiple sports
Great practice to play ratio

If you really want something, then prove it daily by putting in the required work. Stop talking about it & go after it. Too many people are all talk & no action. You want your dreams to come true, but you don’t want to work to make them a reality? Let me know how that works out!

Stop making weak excuses!
