Our new #ArtefactoftheMonth is one of the numerous inscriptions that have survived in #Palmyra: a funerary relief that shows two prematurely deceased children. What were their names, and what do the inscriptions reveal about their lives? csmc.uni-hamburg.de/publications/a…

Possibly the widest #Roman tile ever discovered in Britain! Although Peter won’t let us say that on the internet until he’s checked his facts tonight, so here it is with some ambiguous scales we found lying about…. 😇 #BrandiersKilnProject #Archaeology #BiscuitForScale

It is on the neglected, unremarkable streets of England that the majority of the nation's ghosts live. This is where they crowd. Not in stately homes, not in broken-toothed stone ruins. They are more likely haunt kitchens and sofas than the grand spots of history. – #CJosiffe

Scribes included girls with beautiful handwriting. Bishop Eusebius said so in the 4th century. Also true fact is that scribes became scribes while enslaved. 'The Enslaved People Who Wrote Down the New Testament' hyperallergic.com/936260/the-ens…

This looks great! Not just Roman mosaics in London, though we're massively interested in ancient mosaics here at KCL. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Still thinking about that lovely new mosaic at London Bridge and how glass was also used in mosaics in antiquity, for example at Jerash (in Jordan), recently studied by KCL's Dr Will Wootton: bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2023/2023.06.24

Chariot racing was an #Olympic event. This plaque depicts a Roman chariot race (probably one) held at the Circus Maximus. IMAGO image no. 932 (link from main website).

Had a great day visiting Bloxham museum for their Romans in Bloxham exhibition. Tiny, village museum volunteer-run. Really impressed.

Watching the far right set fire to the newly reopened Spellow Hub library in Liverpool should be lesson enough on how much these thugs really care about “communities” and “young children.” Let none of these thugs pretend they are motivated by anything other than racism and hate.

HOPE not hate statement: The ongoing scenes in Rotherham are beyond appalling. Far-right racists have besieged, attacked and tried to burn down a hotel housing asylum seekers. They did so while chanting Tommy Robinson’s name as well as “burn it” and “set it alight.” 1/7

NHS employers need to urgently support migrant and ethnic minority staff, including those facing racism from patients. BMA members, we're reminding you all to support each other - accompany vulnerable colleagues to and from work if needed. Remember, there is strength in numbers.

Spoke earlier to a Sergeant recovering after having masonry dropped on his head. Then from Sam who saw partner PD Vixen hit just over the eye with a brick. There will be serious consequences for all involved & Staffordshire Police needs community support & information more than ever.

My latest for the The Guardian about this horrifying week of far-right riots and violence. Based n the work of the HOPE not hate research team. Some are calling these far-right riots an outpouring of legitimate anger. Ignore them. They are not theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
