If you’re an educator and regular school shootings make you think ‘I will not take a bullet for other people’s kids,’ that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with you and everything wrong with a country unwilling to protect its most valuable resource.

Spent my career preparing myself to do what's needed if my campus is next, + have the right mix of life (single, no kids) & mental constitution that it's an option for me. But no one should ever have to. It's a dark stain on our nation's soul that we even have to ponder it.

This was a not-insignificant factor in my decision to leave teaching. I had two small children at home. But it was the day my students told me during a drill that they’d never let me go down protecting them because I was a mom - that truly broke something inside of me.
