Irrfan passed away on this day, five years ago. What a loss. Still hard to process. Today, I can’t help but remember his magnificent portrayal of the urdu poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin in the Sardar Jafri-produced show, Kahkashan. It’s available on YouTube, please watch 🎞️

Irrfan played Lenin in the TV play Laal Ghaas Par Neele Ghode, alongside Sutapa Sikdar, whom he later married in 1995. The play was the Hindi adaptation of Mikhail Shatrov’s Blue Horses on Red Grass. It was staged at the Shri Ram Centre, Mandi House, in the early 1990s. 🎭💞

“Policing and Violence arrives at a crucial moment. As India swaps out colonial legal codes for the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” it asks: “can superficial linguistic shifts and bureaucratic rebranding undo entrenched legacies of violence?” Speaking Tiger Jinee Lokaneeta

The leaks selectively quoting (& misinterpreting) the preliminary report into the Air India crash clearly originate in the West where Boeing, engine manufacturers etc want to blame the pilots and claim that they themselves were not culpable. What is worrying is when Indian media

The great ecologist Madhav Gadgil died last night. I am devastated. He was an exemplary scientist and citizen, and, to me, a friend and mentor for forty years and more. Here’s a piece I published on his 80th birthday in May 2022: telegraphindia.com/opinion/people…

Its sad to read this Prabha Khaitan If the arts does not stand for humanity who will. By being supportive of them you are condoning the ongoing devastation.

Whatever my political views, I would never use Madhu Kishwar to critique the Indian PM. She’s got her own agendas and is toxic. After years of reporting on BJP, when book Shades of Saffron came out, I gave copies to many BJP figures I knew and some pictures were taken. Oh by god
