Among Hugh Lane Gallery's collection are 10 paintings and sketches by George Chinnery, including this one. The connection with the artist goes deeper, however, since the Earls of Charlemont were clients of Chinnery's during his time in Dublin. Their home is now the Hugh Lane gallery.

'Oriental Group' ~ George Chinnery (1836). Chinnery made spirited sketches of scenes in India and China, where he lived for nearly 50 years. We see a boy with a hat on the right, next to a girl with a blue shawl and red scarf holding a baby.

Harriet Low Hillard (1809-1877) and her aunt became known as the first American women to go to China. She was a diarist & kept a journal of her years in the east #traveling. This portrait was taken by British painter George Chinnery (1774–1852). #WomenHistoryMonth
