A great little hazel-wood on a very steep hillside, sandwiched between conifer plantation above, and pasture on level ground at the toe of the slope. The OS maps indicate the site has been wooded for at least a century, and probably significantly longer.

The upper reaches of the River Aille Co. Clare. The watercourse cuts down through layers of soft shale and mudstone forming vertical walls until it reaches the Burren limestone below. In places, the washing action of the flow reveals the geological boundary

Coastal sheets of sedimentary rock. The thicker layers are sandstone which is separated by narrow mudstone or siltstone layers. The angular boulders have broken-off due to undermining of the softer thin layers. Mutton Island, Co. Clare. (Warning: non-geologist's interpretation!)

It’s 30 years today since the I.R.A. called its initial ceasefire. Getting a peace deal took until 1998. And yes, that part of the world is still a troubled society. But it’s also seen a huge transformation from the days of the conflict — for the better. Change can happen.

Frances Black is right - there is a legal basis to enact the OTB in Ireland. I struggle to understand how some can still oppose such a move, given the last 10 months of unending violence in Gaza and the West Bank.

Maidenhair Fern near Lisdoonvarna, growing on the wall of a gorge on shale/siltstone bedrock. Possibly the 1st record in the locality since the mid-1800's. Interesting that aforementioned record has it growing on 'the coal measures', an antiquated term for the shale geology
