Just completed a case study for #EDU450 about the Flint Water Crisis - an unfortunate example of environmental racism/classism and the ways that they impact communities. I highly recommend everyone do some in depth research on this. Very interesting from an ed perspective as well

Hi, I'm Caitlin Strickland, Teaching Fellow Class of '22. I am a History Major with Secondary Education Teaching Licensure. Super excited about this final chat of the semester. #eloned

A1: Going into 2020, I had many goals that were not executed as planned. This is not to say I did not achieve them. I came into 2020 with the goal of having a successful sem abroad. Although I left, I was still able to do this. 2020 was all about adjustment. #eloned

A2: The pandemic has shed a light on many already existing disparities that exist within education. Whether it be free meals or access to wifi, the coronavirus pandemic has hurt communities that were already struggling. #eloned

A2: It is extremely important for educators to understand that when the pandemic is under control - that disparities, racism, ableism, etc. will not go away with it. Communities will continue to struggle and many of these issues are not COVID-specific. #eloned

A3: Being a performative ally is something that serves said "ally" without serving said movement. In comparison to this, being a co-conspirator is valuable in the sense that although one is not directly impacted by the social injustice, they are willing. . . (1/2) #ElonEd

to put themselves in situations that are not only uncomfortable, but realistically could be dangerous for those victims of social injustice. Performative allyship serves one selfishly, while being a co-conspirator serves all selflessly. (2/2) #ElonEd

Let's also remember that speaking about social injustice and actually doing something about social injustice are two very different things. I think we pride ourselves in having certain conversations, but we always need to take it further than discussion. #eloned

A4: I think that students can learn best how to be active citizens through the democratic classroom model in addition to a social justice based curriculum. This can cultivate individual thoughts and opinions while also centering teaching around antiracism and equity. #eloned

Hopping in pretty late but still wanted to offer some input! Caitlin Strickland, History Major - Secondary Education Teaching Licensure, class of 2022! #ElonEd

Caitlin Strickland (@cateeducates) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A1: to get students excited about learning and to cultivate a sense of wonder, we must center the classroom around the student. What is the student most interested in? What are they passionate about? #ElonEd

Caitlin Strickland (@cateeducates) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A2: as a teacher candidate I cannot say what works best from the teacher perspective but I do know what has helped me stay most engaged in discussion; make me feel as though my presence and thoughts are vital to the conversation’s success. Make me feel seen and heard. #ElonEd

A3: I often times think about how underused museums and physician historical sites are in social studies education at the middle and secondary education levels. They’re interactive spaces where students are given choice and responsibility. #ElonEd

A5: I would like to cultivate more civic and community engagement through programs that would give children the opportunity to create projects and initiative to better their own schools and communities. #ElonEd

A6: I am most excited to not only get more experience with hands on interaction with teaching and learning, but to give space for students to make connections from the past to the present as we are living through history, today. #ElonEd

Hello, all! My name is Caitlin Strickland and I am a History Major with Secondary Ed. Teaching Licensure, at Elon University - class of '22! This is my first #sschat and I am so excited to get started!

Caitlin Strickland (@cateeducates) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A1: I am doing well, though I am not yet a full-time teacher and I am just beginning my experience with student teaching! I'm looking forward to what I can learn from other experienced classroom teachers participating in the #sschat

I am completing a placement in both and IB History and Civic Literacy course. My CT has been phenomenal at keeping the students engaged (at least as much as possible, post-COVID impact) through keeping them on their feet, and moving the classroom location! #sschat

Q2: my CT also has been switching activities more frequently through making tasks a little bit shorter in order to keep student attention #sschat
