#JaneRussell, star of the day on TCM. Of course #GentlemenPreferBlondes, in which Jane, the brunette, is what we would today call a #girlboss, is at her best, airs 8pm EDT. My favorite Janes, #Macao and #HisKindofWoman, aired earlier. Yours?

#KatharineHepburn, star of the day on TCM. Tonight's movies are #StateoftheUnion, underknown but fascinating and #WomanoftheYear, one of the obligatory push-her-off-her-high-horse films made after she was branded box office poison, but mesmerizing. Your faves?

Embedded in #ClydeHaberman's tereific obit of #PhilDonahue is this quote from Nora Ephron's #Heartburn: “If Sigmund Freud had watched Phil Donahue, he would never have wondered what women want.” Condolences to Marlo Thomas and his other survivors.

Garbo and John Gilbert in #FleshandtheDevil, a stunningly erotic silent film airing on TCM tonight at 9:30 EDT. I remember reading a contemporary critic writing that when they kissed, you could hear the popcorn settle in cartons because the audience was too slacked to eat.

Was thinking of this film during Dem convention in 2016 and last week. Airing on TCM in the middle of the night as part of Fred MacMurray day. Saw it when I was 12, and can't believe it may no longer be a fantasy.

Philadelphians, please join Susan Seidelman and me on Monday evening at Barnes and Noble in Center City. We'll be talking about women in cinema in general and about why she wrote her memoir and I wrote a biography of Agnes Varda. As the DJs used to say, Be there or be square.
