📍#SUDAN: This week for the third time in the last 2 months, WFP convoys crossed from Tine, Chad into #Darfur carrying enough food for 160,000 people. The impending rainy season will make many roads in Darfur and Kordofan impassable. WFP is urgently working to preposition food.

Great to spend time with our remarkable World Food Programme teams in Jerusalem, #WestBank & #Gaza, who move mountains every day to get food and life-saving assistance to Palestinians in need. Many work in near impossible conditions, risking their lives. Deep respect and gratitude.

Briefed our Executive Board on World Food Programme's work to scale up our response to the worsening #Sudan crisis. We're working around the clock to double our assistance & open new corridors to get food in & across the country. My asks to member states: advocacy, funding & diplomatic efforts.

Sudan’s war has unleashed an unprecedented hunger catastrophe. Half of all Sudanese – 25.6M people – are acutely hungry. Of them, 755k face starvation with millions more on the brink. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification shows that time is running out to prevent famine. We need access & funding. Now.

🆘 Our worst fears in #Sudan have come true. Famine is found to be taking hold in Zamzam camp - home to more than 220,000 displaced people – in North Darfur. Across Sudan, nearly 26 million people are struggling to put enough food on their plates every single day.

📢WFP Assistant Executive Director Stephen Omollo briefs the Security Council on #Sudan "Humanitarian agencies will do everything we can to prevent famine from engulfing Sudan. But we can only operate where conditions allow, and where we are granted access."

Amal was among the first to enter Gaza City, with great courage, to deliver lifesaving assistance after conflict trapped families living there. As a WFP driver, she and all humanitarians in #Gaza and beyond deserve protection while performing their work. 💙 #NotATarget

Every day, World Food Programme team members #ActForHumanity. I am incredibly proud of their dedication to achieving #ZeroHunger. This #WorldHumanitarianDay is also a call to action: Aid workers safety is non-negotiable. Attacks on humanitarian aid workers must end. #NotATarget

In Adre today on the border between Chad and Sudan. United Nations stepping up efforts to avert famine in Darfur following the commitment by Sudan to allow x-border access. While focus is on Darfur, supporting the 1 m refugees and their host communities in Chad also urgent.

This is totally unacceptable and must change immediately. We have repeatedly asked for a functioning deconfliction system in Gaza, and yet the current arrangements have failed. Humanitarians are #NotATarget. wfp.org/news/wfp-tempo…

Recommend reading The Economist this weekend about why the world must give more attention to #Sudan. Why Sudan’s catastrophic war is the world’s problem economist.com/leaders/2024/0… from The Economist

Getting across is the first important step, now our focus turn to sustaining the pipeline and to delivery. World Food Programme is strengthening its capacity in Darfur to ensure that trucks can reach intended destinations and that distributions are targeted to the most vulnerable.

In #Chad this week I was stunned by the beauty of the landscape. But the rains have been extreme this year and people are struggling with flooding. World Food Programme is assisting affected families with cash or food. More support needed for #climate adaptation.
