📍#SUDAN: This week for the third time in the last 2 months, WFP convoys crossed from Tine, Chad into #Darfur carrying enough food for 160,000 people. The impending rainy season will make many roads in Darfur and Kordofan impassable. WFP is urgently working to preposition food.

Sudan’s war has unleashed an unprecedented hunger catastrophe. Half of all Sudanese – 25.6M people – are acutely hungry. Of them, 755k face starvation with millions more on the brink. 🆘 Our worst fears in #Sudan have come true. Famine is found to be taking hold in Zamzam camp - home to more than 220,000 displaced people – in North Darfur. Across Sudan, nearly 26 million people are struggling to put enough food on their plates every single day.

📢WFP Assistant Executive Director Stephen Omollo briefs the Security Council on #Sudan "Humanitarian agencies will do everything we can to prevent famine from engulfing Sudan. But we can only operate where conditions allow, and where we are granted access."

In Adre today on the border between Chad and Sudan. United Nations stepping up efforts to avert famine in Darfur following the commitment by Sudan to allow x-border access. While focus is on Darfur, supporting the 1 m refugees and their host communities in Chad also urgent.

Getting across is the first important step, now our focus turn to sustaining the pipeline and to delivery. World Food Programme is strengthening its capacity in Darfur to ensure that trucks can reach intended destinations and that distributions are targeted to the most vulnerable.

In #Chad this week I was stunned by the beauty of the landscape. But the rains have been extreme this year and people are struggling with flooding. World Food Programme is assisting affected families with cash or food. More support needed for #climate adaptation.
