Earlier this year, University of Alberta said their hands were tied about a residential school genocide denialist speaking/fundraising on campus despite pressure from students and faculty. Today, they immediately called in riot police to crack down on their students for protesting a genocide

I remember attending all night protests for tuition caps 20+ years ago at the UofA. No police response then. What's different now? Racism? Islamophobia? Increased militarization of the police? Creep of rightwing populism? How is people demanding an end to genocide, a threat?

People are claiming that sending police after University of Alberta students is okay because the University grounds are private property and the students were thus trespassing.

As a law professor, let me state that this is a gross mischaracterization of the law.

Our focus should be on supporting families fleeing Rafah but as a second priority, maybe we should work on a legal fund to help these students fight back against the institutions that are assaulting and criminalizing them for opposing genocide.

If MY child was attacked by police on his campus while peacefully protesting, a right protected by section 2(c) of Canada's charter, I would be connecting with other parents and students to prepare a law suit against the school and the police.

The police are violently attacking students for occupying the campus they pay to be on.

This morning Edmonton Police violently swept the University of Alberta student encampment. I’m waking to horrific video. At least 2 arrests.

Sidra was only 7 years old. She was found dangling from a wall in Rafah, a designated “safe zone,” her body blown up. Her legs gone. Her insides were out. This is an image that will be seared into my brain forever. We will never forget her. She is resting in paradise.
