Marguerite Higgins, Cal🌟 Class of 1941, was born Sept. 3, 1920. A pioneer woman journalist, she covered WW II, Korea & Vietnam, and was Moscow Bureau Chief for the NY Herald Tribune in the 1950s. Higgins was the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for Foreign Correspondence.

In 1950, the US military ordered Higgins to leave Korea on the ground that women war correspondents were "too much trouble." Higgins convinced General Douglas MacArthur to lift the ban, which is considered a landmark for women journalists.

Cal🌟 Marguerite Higgins wrote and was an editor for The Daily Californian. After graduation, she headed to New York with one suitcase and $7, giving herself a year to get started in a journalism career or she would return to California and become a French teacher.

Kevin Starr, Cal🌟 M.S. 1974, was born Sept. 3, 1940. He grew up in an orphanage and in public housing in San Francisco, then earned a PhD at Harvard and studied Library Science at Cal. He was California State Librarian 1994-2004 & wrote a renowned 9 volume history of California.

He wrote a recommendation when I applied for Grad school in History, & a generous congratulatory letter on our publication of "A History of San Francisco's Cable Cars". Never too busy to help someone.

The first laboratory on the Cal🌟 campus in 1874, the year after the University moved to Berkeley. Located in South Hall, the lab was shared by the departments of Chemistry and Agriculture. In the photo is Willard Rising, the University of California's first Chemistry professor.
