It is a treat to visit Christmas Island & work with enthusiastic students & volunteers. This research commenced in 2015 & will continue for at least another 2-yrs. It takes time to learn a species secrets, & nocturnal species can be even more secretive BATsLAB Animal Ecology Lab 2/2

"Crazy ants were associated with an increase in flying‐fox activity levels of up to 22%. [..] Further studies are needed [..] to better understand the declines and extinctions of these and other vertebrates in island ecosystems worldwide" Bat Conservation International Australasian Bat Society Bat_papers

I am SO SO excited Eliane McCarthy is coming to Christmas Island in 1,5 weeks to apply this method to the Christmas Island #flyingfox! 🦇 Thanks to Bat Conservation International we'll be able to monitor inaccessible areas on the island and aid conservation of this Critically Endangered Species🥳

After two weeks of cyclone weather fieldwork mostly consists of clearing roads, and not so much of bats... We will get there though!! 💪 #fieldwork #phdlife

Very rare footage of #variableflyingfoxes catching moths and eating them! The bat on the left makes a tent with her wings to stop the moth in flight, then catches it in her wrist to eat it. This is very fascinating behavior and amazing that it’s been caught on camera!
