The grand contradiction of America is that they need us to keep consuming but they also do not want to pay us. They will shame you for not spending enough while simultaneously not paying you enough to spend.

King of the Hill is the first years-later Tv show since Twin Peaks that’s great. And like Peaks it has a haunted quality: the passage of time is allowed to matter.

Weapons is nothing but one structural plot gimmick (the one from Barbarian) employed over and over. No soul, no texture, no point despite the disturbing implications of the premise. But it looks important and has great PR so it's one of the most praised movies of the year.

Every Paul Newman story: "He won his race car after beating the Devil in a contest to see who could make the most delicious vinaigrette" Every Marlon Brando story: "Brando insisted The Hamburglar was real, alive in the Philippines, and responsible for his financial troubles."

Highest 2 Lowest: an elaborate, smug, reactionary self-congratulation party disguised as a riff on High and Low. Too shaggy and indulgent to work as a thriller; more interesting than good, especially for how it rejects Kurosawa's class concerns.

Spinal Tap II is no one's idea of a good movie, but it wears its nostalgia surprisingly well, with a final act that is authentically poignant. Its irrelevance becomes its grace.

With schools gutting their science & humanities programs and the tech industry keen to make us dumber, it’s time to revive the concept of the autodidact: self-education for the pure joy of learning. Read great books. Form study groups. Be passionate in the pursuit of knowledge.

You’re not a true cinephile unless you have at least 5 movies in your regular rotation that you freely admit are objectively terrible

"You need to get used to the task of writing. You must make an effort to learn to regard it, not as something painful, but as routine." --- Akira Kurosawa

true cinephilia starts at owning every sequel in a horror franchise on physical media even if only the first and third movies are good
