Here’s my post on the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada Supreme Court of Canada 🇨🇦 that IP addresses attract a reasonable expectation of privacy and seizure by the police requires prior judicial authorization | #privacy #DataProtection #internet #cybersecurity claytonrice.com/from-the-hands…
Founding member of the Alberta CTLA Clayton Rice K.C. @wiretaplawyer receiving the Harradence Prize on Dec 15 in Edmonton. It is one of our bar's highest honours and acknowledges a dedicated commitment to the most important principles of our profession.
Congratulations to colleagues Heather Ferg Heather Ferg and Sarah Rankin Sarah, counsel on R. v. Bykovets, where the Supreme Court of Canada 🇨🇦 ruled today that there is a reasonable expectation of privacy in an internet (IP) address | #DigitalPrivacy cbc.ca/news/politics/…
R v Bykovets is one of the most important s. 8 Charter cases of the last decade. The Court is moving towards a mosaic theory of privacy, which will be huge in the AI, big data age. Nice to see my partner Nader R Hasan quoted in the judgment. decisions.scc-csc.ca/scc-csc/scc-cs…
Congrats to my partner Heather Ferg and associate Sarah who were counsel to Mr. Bykovets at the Supreme Court of Canada on this case. I am so proud of them for such an amazing accomplishment.
I think Gerald Chan is right. R v Bykovets has profound implications for s. 8 of the Charter in the digital age. It is a full-throated embrace of the Mosaic Theory of privacy. [Thread 1/]
Once again, in the police accountability process, the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service is exposed as a weak link.
What, if anything, has RCMP Alberta done about this misconduct?
