Did you know there are over 400 species of velvet ants in the US? Despite their name they are actually not ants they are wingless wasps and the new field guide to velvet ants of North America is available starting tomorrow at your favorite bookstore.

New paper out! Does the culling of large herbivores have any indirect impacts on other species? Yes, we found ground-dwelling beetle populations were negatively impacted after the culling of sika deer on Nakajima Island in Japan. academic.oup.com/ee/advance-art…

I got too close to this hawk moth (Sphingidae: Hippotion scrofa, I think) and it flashed some warning colouration at me! 😡🚨 Had no idea that moths could do this, but it is SO adorable ♥️

A spider on the beach! Fab colours. I love how it blends in with the sand. Often hard to spot at first, but beaches are crawling with biodiversity 🥰

17 MILLION insects migrate through a 30m Pyrenean mountain pass every autumn! They fly through the mountains on their remarkable journeys from northern Europe (including the UK) into Spain and beyond for the winter! Our new paper is out right now: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/epdf/10.10… 🧵

Cooooool Plagiocephalus latifrons (Henderson’s, 1909) - 1 of the many stalk-eyed flies & a dam fine specimen caught by Leshon Lee at #FlySchool24 There are many fly families with stalk eyed spp -some with antennae at end of stalks, but others the antennae still on head

I recently found this copy of Flies of the British Isles by Colyer & Hammond in the local bookshop here in Falmouth, Cornwall. A beautiful mid 20th century book, and those illustrations...!

Still adjusting to the heat and humidity of North Queensland but a recent highlight was getting to see fireflies for the first time. Got a shot of one on my hand - such amazing creatures! #WildOz #firefly #bioluminescence
