“It’s not that complicated” is a common refrain among folks who understand that a teacher teaching stuff is the surest way to get lots of kids learning everyday. But it is complicated in the sense that explicit, focused lessons are far from being universal in education.

Zach Groshell Math, reading comprehension, and writing are just as skill based as music, theater, and sports. All need practice.  Somehow they are treated differently than music, theater, and sports. Schools do not accept anti-practice attitudes in music, theater, and sports. 1/2

So even if a kid's ELA teachers are all masters at their craft from K-12, if they all teach different approaches, the result could be a lot of confusion and lessons that cancel each other out, if you're not careful. Zach Groshell

For districts that just spent a ton of money on a math program and now regret what they’ve done, it feels wrong to sink any more time and resources into fixing it. But you can’t afford to allow kids to be exposed to weak, confusing lessons. Try to improve it, or get a new one.
