I just heard a story about a woman. Her husband’s sister was dying in a hospital in Lagos and she was the one sitting beside her bed. The doctors had already said there was little hope.

Before she passed, the sister held her hand and begged her to take care of her children if she didn’t make it. She said the children had no father and she trusted no one else. The woman agreed without hesitation. After the sister died, she kept her promise.

She raised the children like her own. School runs, hospital visits, midnight fevers, PTA meetings, sacrifices nobody saw. Some relatives said she was doing too much, but she believed she was honoring a promise to a dying woman.

Years passed and people sometimes joked that one of the boys looked exactly like her husband. The same smile, the same walk, the same quiet behavior. She dismissed it as coincidence. One day she was looking for a document in her husband’s drawer and an old envelope fell out.

Inside was a DNA test. That was how she found out the children she had raised for years as her husband’s sister’s children…Were actually her husband’s children. The sister didn’t ask her to raise them because they had no father. She asked because the father was already there.
