September means electrofishing surveys🐟! Our biggest Brown trout yet at 329mm found in the Calder. On the river bank, the WRT team ID the fish species and take fork length measurements. No fish are harmed during the survey and all were returned back to river safely.

WRT team joined instructor Jo for a day of MoRPh training last week📋! The surveys will help the team assess and report on the conditions of our rivers over time, providing (hopefully!) some interesting results in the long term.

Great day with The Ernest Cook Trust at Low Beckside Farm, learning how to create impactful traineeships and build land-based skills. Big thanks to Vicky and Cathy for organising—excited too see how we can build future education opportunities in the Brock and Calder LRS Project!

In Somerset, a giant science experiment to tackle flooding began 10 years ago. Rather than trying to resist the sea, a large tract of land was surrendered to it. Lots of people were opposed. The local MP called it “an extravagant, ridiculous scheme”🧵

Some really interesting learnings from this research we participated in earlier in the year. Lots to put in to practice and help shape landscape recovery through blended finance.

Big thanks to @blackpoolsixth and Edge Hill University for an empowering day at the Youth Climate Conference 2024. The team left feeling motivated and inspired💪! Our stall focused on how to break into the conservation sector🎇and the NFM work of the Trust with a brash bundle demo.

Further afield in #Cumbria for The Wild Trout Trust project proposals to feed into Penrith to Kendal Arc #LandscapeRecovery Project. Denuded & depauperate, it will need to be transformational! So many channels realigned, straightened & perched, disconnecting floodplains

Before: an artificially straight, steep, redirected river that was prone to flooding and bank erosion 👎 After: a more natural channel that boosts biodiversity, stores stormwater, and captures carbon 🐟 How we're improving the Otterburn Beck: wildtrout.org/wttblog/whats-…

We’ve planted a lot of wet areas with rushes with alder and willow trees in cactus tree guards It’s a no cost way to get more trees in to the farm - and may well create more grazing not less

What a brilliant day CarbonCallingFarm, discussing all things regenerative and nature friendly farming. We’ve come back with lots of new ideas to share with farmers in the Wyre. Thanks to The Rivers Trust for supporting us to attend.
