St Werburgh’s Church on Mina Road once stood on Corn Street. As its parish was so small, in 1877 it was dismantled and reconstructed (not entirely identically) miles away. Around 100 coffins were also moved from the site and reinterred in Greenbank Cemetery.

'Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created.'

Brian Clough and Jack Charlton were two working-class legends who stood up to the fascists in the 1970s and were in solidarity with mining communities under attack in the 1980s.

While most of us would view a stay in a mental health institution as an inconvenient and unpleasant limit to our liberty, it was not the same for all in the 19th century.

Thread - final episode of brilliant series on Channel 4 is very moving, upsetting & powerful.
It focuses firstly on the horrific murder in Walthamstow in 1981, of Mrs Parveen Khan & her 3 children, killed by persons unknown. Firefighters were sure this was arson &

On 10th April 1848 100,000 Chartists rallied in Kennington for the vote. A march to Parliament across Blackfriars Bridge was blocked by troops.A strategic mistake? Should they have met North of the Thames instead

Another classic 1936 poster. 'Aixafem el feixisme' (Let’s crush fascism) by Pere Català i Pic shows an espardenya (Cat) alpargata (Span), crushing a swastika on a wet, cobbled street of Barcelona, symbolising both fight by the working class against fascism and Catalan identity.

These engines in the 1887 built Underfall Power House were installed in 1907 to replace the original steam powered ones. A vast web of hydraulic pipes wove around Harbour and this powerhouse forced dock-water pressure through them to control cranes, bridges and locks.
